Our students use AI every week. Here is how we make sure the thinking still happens in their heads.

Every parent asks the same question in the first meeting: won’t AI just do the work for them? It can, if the work is the kind a machine is good at. So we change the work.

Draft, then defend

Students may use AI to produce a first draft of anything. Then they have to defend every line of it out loud, to a classmate who is trying to find the mistake. The draft is cheap. The defense is where they learn.

After a few weeks, students start catching errors on their own. They notice when an answer is too confident, when a source does not exist, or when a summary drops the most important point.

What to try at home

Next time your child shows you something an AI wrote, ask one question: how do you know this is right? If they can answer, the tool is helping. If they cannot, it is doing the homework.
