Two weeks before Project Day, we invited forty people from the neighborhood to sit in on a rehearsal. Shop owners, parents from other schools, two retired teachers. We asked them for one thing: honest notes.
The notes
The most common note was not about nerves or slides. It was about length. Almost every talk was too long, and the best part was buried in the middle.
The second most common note was kinder: guests remembered stories, not statistics. One student’s talk about her grandmother’s shop was the only one everyone could repeat afterwards.
What changed
Students cut their talks by a third and moved their best story to the first minute. On Project Day, the room stayed quiet until the last word.
