Ten quiet signs that a teenager is ready for a first job, and what to do if a few are missing.

A first job teaches things no class can: showing up, being trusted with money and handling a difficult customer. But timing matters.

The checklist

Can they wake up on their own and be somewhere on time? Can they ask an adult a question without help? Do they know what they would do with the money?

Can they say no to an extra shift? Can they explain a mistake without hiding it? If most answers are yes, they are probably ready.

If a few are missing

Start with a smaller step: a weekend task for a neighbor, or a volunteer shift. Readiness is built, not discovered.
